Founded 93 years ago by one of the greatest female art pioneers, the Martha Graham Dance Company stays true to that tradition with its EVE project, commissioning work by today's distinctive women choreographers in honor of the 2020 centennial of the 19th Amendment. At the Hop, MGDC will perform an EVE commission by Pam Tanowitz underscored by Pulitzer-winning composer Caroline Shaw, alongside the 2007 Lamentation Variations, in which today's dancemakers riff on Graham's 1930 solo Lamentation, and Graham's iconic Appalachian Spring. The music for the evening is provided by an ensemble including members of the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra.
Tanowitz lit up the Hop last season with New Goldberg Variations, and we are thrilled to have her work again presented at the Hop. Encouraged by MGDC Artistic Director Janet Eilber, Tanowitz built her work, Untitled (Souvenir), from appealing shapes and phrases from Graham's work. The result is a stripped-down, eloquent work for eight dancers that spools, at slow-to-medium pace, to Shaw's brightly colored score for double string quartet.
The Top of the Hop Bar will be open Fri & Sat, Jan 17 & 18 from 6:30 pm until after the show. Bring your ticket for $1 off a drink; Hop Members at the Investor+ level receive a complimentary drink.
