Our season finale surely earns the title “Epic” with music that uses the full power and kaleidoscope-like colors of the modern symphony orchestra to take our listeners back to epochs gone by. Respighi’s gargantuan “Pines of Rome” tours the grand city of antiquity in his unforgettable work, while his “Church Windows” gives several biblical stories frequently depicted in religious art his unique and much imitated treatment. Star cellist Julian Schwarz returns to Springfield in Swiss/American composer Ernest Bloch’s “Schelomo” (King Solomon), a Hebraic Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra. Utilizing the full expressive power of the cello and the coloristic possibilities of the orchestra to their fullest extent, this work will haunt and captivate like few others! Continuing our celebration of Beethoven, we begin with probably the strangest and most unique work in his entire catalog—“Wellington’s Victory”—which describes a battlefield in vivid detail.
